ORIGAMI TUTORIAL The Jumping Frog

In Japan, the month of June brings with it its share of rainy episodes. This rainy season, called tsuyu (梅雨 literally “plum rain” because it corresponds to the plum harvest period), lasts no less than 6 weeks!

For this new article, I wanted to offer you the tutorial for an adorable folding frog ( kaeru蛙 in Japanese), an animal often associated with rain (and predicting the weather). This origami, which will amuse children, has the particularity of being able to jump!

THE JUMPING FROG IN ORIGAMI

In order to make an origami jumping frog, you will need:

This folding can obviously be available in several sizes.
If you choose :

  • 1 square of 10cm side , you will obtain a jumping frog approximately 4cm wide by 3cm high (flat)
  • 1 square of 15cm side , you will obtain a jumping frog approximately 6cm wide by 5cm high (flat)
  • 1 square of 20cm side , you will obtain a jumping frog approximately 8cm wide by 6cm high

If you want to practice this folding, you can use 15cm by 15cm squares of paper from the Japanese brand Toyo . With one colored side and the other white, they are perfect for practicing origami. It is a paper that marks the folds well and is perfect for learning origami.

Let's move on to the explanations of folding without further ado, in photos and video!

  1. With the white side facing you, fold the square in half to obtain a rectangle (mark, by folding and unfolding, the vertical median).
  2. Fold the rectangle obtained in step 1 in half to obtain a small square.
  3. Open the last fold to find the rectangle from step 1 and fold the upper part of the rectangle in half.
  4. Unfold the upper part folded in step 3.
  5. Fold the top square in half to mark a first diagonal then unfold.
  6. Fold the top square in half to mark a second diagonal then unfold.
  7. Press the sides of the square, on either side of the folds marked previously, to tuck in the folds.
  8. Flatten the triangle obtained in step 7.

  9. Fold the bottom square in half.
  10. Mark the vertical center crease.
  11. Fold the left flap and the right flap against the central fold by passing them under the top of the fold, in the shape of a triangle.
  12. Fold the bottom of the fold in half.
  13. Unfold.
  14. Grasp the points indicated on the fold (marked by the • in the photo).
  15. Pull slightly upwards...
  16. ...then outwards.

  17. Flatten well. Grab the two tips (marked by the • in the photo) and fold them down.
  18. Fold two symmetrical tabs at the top and bottom along the dotted lines.
  19. You get this.
  20. Fold the shape obtained in step 19 in half.
  21. Fold the top of the fold toward you, folding it in half.
  22. You get this. Flip your folding
  23. Your jumping frog is finished!

If you want to bring your little frogs to life, you can apply pairs of fake eyes using gel glue or draw them with a black marker on the top of their heads!

This folding is taken from the first volume of my origami book published by Marabout, “ L'Origami comme par Magie ” which brings together no less than 50 foldings. Designed to be as accessible and fun as possible, this book details each fold, classified in order of difficulty and composed of photos and drawings (for the most complex steps). If you want to be tempted, it is available in store and on the e-shop, as well as the second volume !

I'll see you very soon for new creative tutorials around Japanese paper, origami and paper flowers.
