DIY Lucky Garland
If you are sensitive to Japanese culture, you will know that there are many lucky charms such as maneki-neko or even daruma , which are supposed to bring you good fortune. For some time now, we have been selling adorable bells bearing the image of these little charms which inspired me to create colorful garlands!
So I'm back with you today, in this new article, to share with you this quick and simple tutorial, to show you that sometimes you only need a few materials to create a pretty Japanese-style decoration!
Inspired by these adorable bells, we have imagined a unique creative kit containing all the materials necessary to make these little lucky garlands in five colorful ranges . The assembly explanations can be found in this article! A QR code is present on each kit to easily refer you to this tutorial.
To make your own lucky garland, equip yourself with a lucky garland kit in the colored range of your choice including all the necessary supplies, namely:
- 1 set of 18 Japanese paper stickers ,
- 9 colored wooden beads or 3 wooden beads, 4 gold glitter polystyrene balls and 6 small round gold stickers (depending on the assortment chosen)
- 4 small bells,
- 3 large bells,
- 3m of wire,
- 1 needle .
NB: If you wish to make your own garland without using the kit, you can freely refer to the list of supplies above.
You can also use 6cm by 6cm origami papers to make small origami which can complete your garland. Discover our article “ Our origami tutorials in 6x6cm ”. It is also possible to reduce folds that you are already used to making to 15cm by 15cm in this smaller size, like the crane for example!
Let’s move on to the assembly explanations without further ado! Nothing too complicated here.
- Bring the different supplies: stickers, beads, small and large bells, thread and needle.
- To start, put a small bell on the end of your wire. Tie a double knot to hold it in place.
- Then thread a large bell higher on your wire...
- …and tie a double knot to hold it in place.
- Then thread a bead along your wire...
- …place it a few cm above the bell…
- … pass the needle through the pearl a second time…
- …in order to form a loop…
- …then pull on your thread to create a knot that will allow the bead to stay in place.
- You get this! We will then place the stickers along the wire.
- Peel the film from your Japanese paper sticker.
- Place it on your wire, sticky side towards you.
- Get a second sticker. If you have difficulty peeling off the film from your stickers, do not hesitate to “twist” your paper slightly.
- Peel off the sticker film...
- ...and stick the 2 stickers on top of each other, taking the wire in a “sandwich”.
- You get this!
As shown in the diagram below, repeat the combination of beads, bells and stickers 3 times on your thread in the following order: a small bell > a large bell > a bead > a sticker > a bead > a sticker > a pearl > a sticker (and so on).
Here are three colorful assortments that we offer to make a garland using the steps above:
These two other ranges have some subtleties in terms of the assembly of certain elements. In fact, the 9 colored wooden beads are replaced by:
- 3 colorful wooden beads,
- 3 golden polystyrene balls,
- 6 small round golden stickers.
Here are additional explanations below:
- Bring your different supplies: your stickers, your beads, your small and large bells, your thread and your needle.
- ASSEMBLY of the polystyrene ball - Using your needle, pierce your polystyrene ball on both sides...
- ...so you can thread it onto your wire that way.
- You get this!
- ASSEMBLY of the small round golden stickers - Take one of the small round golden stickers.
- Place it on your wire, sticky side towards you.
- Get a second sticker…
- …and take the wire in a “sandwich”, like this.
- You get this!
I made several garlands so that I could hang them everywhere and add little colorful touches to my decoration. So I'm sharing with you below some colorful combinations of paper, thread, beads and bells that I made!

Merci d’avance.
