Japanese creatures: the new book by Sandrine Thommen.
Welcome to the strange world of Japanese monsters... I received Sandrine Thommen's latest book a few days ago at the store and I immediately wanted to share some images with you! Last night we had a great time with my son Ulysse leafing through this collection, splendidly illustrated by Sandrine (he too is now a big fan).
But, what is a youkai ? Youkai in Japanese means “strange appearance”, “ mysterious event” in short, monsters ! For hundreds of years, the Japanese imagination has been populated by supernatural creatures that are often found in the world of manga. They are used to give a name and a form to all the strange things that we have difficulty explaining. For example, it will be said that a tsunami was caused by Bakekujira, the ghost whale, a fox who was injured by a hunter will return to take revenge in the form of a Kitsune. But the character of youkai is never all black or white. They are rarely completely mean or nice. They are in between, mocking and pranksters, sometimes friendly and caring and often terrifying!
Nine-tailed fox, evil cat, turtle, bird-man or even hybrid objects, all are brought together in this magnificent colorful bestiary. These sometimes friendly, sometimes terrifying creatures are portrayed by Sandrine, brought to life by magnificent Japanese graphics and patterns. Like each of his books, we want to leave it constantly open to be able to admire the precision and poetry of his universe. I can only invite you to dive into the pages of this world filled with fabulous stories...
